How to Rhinestone Like a Pro: A Step-by-Step Guide for Pageant Wear
Adding rhinestones to a pageant dress or costume is a game-changer. Those sparkling details catch the stage lights beautifully, making any outfit look stunning. If you’ve ever wondered how to rhinestone a pageant dress like a pro, you’re in the right place! In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process, from choosing the best rhinestones for pageant wear to applying them with ease. Plus, I’ll share my go-to rhinestone tools, including my favorite storage solution for keeping all those little gems organized!
Choosing the Best Rhinestones for Pageant Wear
Not all rhinestones are created equal. When selecting rhinestones, consider the following: Glass stones are the best option for pageant wear as they provide the highest level of sparkle. Acrylic rhinestones may be a budget-friendly option, but they do not reflect light the same way and lack the brilliance needed for stage presence.
Application Method: Some rhinestones come with heat-activated adhesive, while others require glue. I prefer to apply my own glue for a more accurate placement.
Size Matters: The standard stone sizes I keep on hand are 16SS & 20SS. I also use shape stones to add dimension and variety in size.
Color Selection: Stones come in many colors. I like to use a mix of AB, crystal, and colors that match the dress or OOC I am working on.

To make the rhinestoning process smooth, here are the must-have tools
Rhinestone Picker:
A wax-tipped tool makes it easy to grab and place rhinestones precisely.
Syringe for Glue:
A fine-tip syringe helps control the amount of adhesive you use.
Tweezers:
Handy for adjusting placement.
Storage Box:
A divided photo box case keeps your rhinestones organized by color and size.
Bead Funnels:
I use these funnels to help hold my rhinestones while I stone my pageant dresses or OOCs. The funnels allow me to organize the stones as well as give them a shake to make sure my stones are facing up for me to grab them. When I'm done with the stones the funnel makes clean up quick and easy.Â
E6000 Glue / Gem-Tac Glue:
Both are strong fabric adhesives that provide a secure hold for rhinestones. Gem tack is not waterproof and will dissolve in water. It doesn't have the harsh smell like E6000, so if you are sensitive to E6000 this might be a great option for you. Gem Tack also won't dissolve foam. If you opt to use foam flowers this is a great option for that.Â

Optional Tools
Soldering iron and glass cutting board to cut your lace appliques if you buy lace by the yard. This is a faster and cleaner way to cut the lace away from the tulle. This tool is also great for sealing the ends of ribbons for bows.Â

How to Apply Rhinestones to Fabric
Follow these simple steps for a professional finish:
Plan Your Design Sketch your rhinestone pattern on paper or lightly mark placement on the fabric with tailor’s chalk.
Use the Right Adhesive A strong fabric glue like Gem-Tac or E6000 works well for pageant wear.
Apply Glue with a Syringe A small dot of glue is all you need. Too much can seep out and dull the sparkle.
Pick and Place the Rhinestones Use a rhinestone picker to grab each stone and place it carefully on the glue.
Let It Dry Completely Allow at least 24 hours for the glue to fully set before handling or wearing the garment.
Tips for Long-Lasting Rhinestones
Do not machine wash—hand wash or spot clean when necessary.
Store your finished garments carefully to prevent rhinestones from getting scratched.
