The Ultimate Guide to Planning and Designing a Pageant OOC
How I Plan a Pageant OOC: From Concept to Creation
Planning and designing a pageant OOC (Outfit of Choice) starts long before the first stitch is sewn. It’s all about having a clear plan, a solid vision, and a step-by-step approach to bring that vision to life. To help with this process, I offer two essential planners: the Pageant Sewing Planner and the Sewing Business Planner. If you’re wondering which one you need, here’s the good news: you don’t need both! The Sewing Business Planner includes all the pages from the Pageant Sewing Planner, plus extra tools designed to help you run your business as a designer more efficiently and smoothly. Whether you’re designing for yourself or for clients, both planners will ensure you stay organized and on track.
In my latest YouTube video, I walk you through my entire process of planning and designing a pageant OOC. From brainstorming ideas to the final design. If you haven’t watched it yet, be sure to check it out below!
Planning and Designing a Winning Pageant OOC (Outfit of Choice)
Step 1: Finding Inspiration with a Mind Map
Every great OOC starts with a mind map to organize inspiration. I begin by placing the main theme in the center—whether it’s a ship, a character, or a concept—and then branch out into different categories. Each circle on the mind map represents an aspect of the theme, such as textures, historical influences, movement, or colors. For example, if the theme is a ship, I might include elements like sails, waves, navigation, and maritime history. This process helps me explore creative angles and develop a unique, cohesive design that tells a story.
Step 2: Sketching and Mood Boards
Once I have a concept in mind, I create a mood board and sketch out the design. My Pageant Sewing Planner plays a huge role in this step, helping me organize my ideas, gather fabric swatches, and visualize how all the details will come together. I also use the Child and Adult Croquis in my planner to sketch out proportions and design details accurately.
Step 3: Choosing Fabrics, Materials, and Planning Construction
Selecting the right fabrics is crucial for achieving the look and movement I want. I focus on textures, shine, and stretch to ensure the outfit not only looks stunning but also allows for comfort and flexibility on stage. My Project Specification Sheet in the planner helps me map out all the essential details, including the fabric choices, notions, patterns I plan to use, the customer the outfit is for, and the due date. This structured approach keeps everything organized and ensures I have all the materials I need before I start sewing.
In addition to selecting materials, I also use the Project Specification Sheet to plan the construction of the outfit. This includes breaking down the outfit into manageable steps, deciding which techniques I’ll use, determining if special trims or embellishments are needed, and ensuring all necessary materials are on hand. I also take into account how the outfit will function—will it have quick changes? Will it need special underpinnings for structure? Planning ahead prevents surprises later on!
Step 4: Bringing It to Life
Once everything is mapped out, it’s time to sew! I tackle the project in stages, testing along the way to make sure everything fits and functions as planned. The final step is adding those extra details—rhinestones, appliqués, or unique design touches that make the outfit truly shine.
